Thank you for the participants. The following message was my welcome address:
Welcome from the President of AEAEH
Welcome to Takamatsu. On behalf of the local organizing committee, I am pleased to invite participants from around the world to the Third Conference of East Asian Environmental History (EAEH 2015). EAEH originated in 2009, when more than twenty scholars of East Asian environmental history participating in WCEH 2009, held in Copenhagen and Malmo, shared their concerns for the underrepresentation of East Asia and agreed to form the Association for East Asian Environmental History (AEAEH).
The AEAEH is an organization of 435 individual members (as of 9 September 2015) engaged in research on East Asian environmental issues with historical perspectives. Scholars from fields related to environmental studies, such as history, archaeology, literature, ethics, anthropology, geography, demography, economics, sociology, law, biology, ecology, agronomy, nutrition, medical science, public health, meteorology, geology, and engineering (energy, hydrology, municipal engineering), are all welcome to join our membership. Interdisciplinary approaches will be emphasized, and within the sphere of East Asia a wide temporal span will be covered. Comparative studies, of course, will also be encouraged.
The conference program demonstrates the diversity of fields represented at EAEH 2015. Around 30 Japanese AEAEH members have formed ten Network Committees (Table 1) to select keywords for the conference and to plan each session. We hope that these groundbreaking networks will sow seeds for future interdisciplinary studies “beyond borders”.
EAEH 2015 welcomes 250 to 300 participants from 20 countries, not limited to the East Asian area. Our conference will have a total of 61 sessions, including plenary sessions, keynotes, book sessions, an open symposium, parallel sessions and round tables. On Friday, most of us will explore the beauty as well as modern challenges of an island of the Seto Inland Sea.
This booklet contains general information, the full schedule of the conference and details of keynote speeches. The index should be helpful in finding out when and where you will be presenting. Participants are invited to attend the tea ceremony and Welcome Party on Thursday.
We are grateful for your warm cooperation in making our conference possible and hope that it will be enjoyable and fruitful for all who participate.
